..You've
heard of shock rock, shock art and shock radio, right?
But shock blues? Try to imagine a Southern Howard Stern,
wringing solos from a Telecaster over a deep groove,
growling "My baby don't wear no panties / Ask me
how I know..." that's just one of many salacious
songs on Mean Gene Kelton's latest disc.
A 60-minute plus set of 15 originals. They get your
attention on first listen...
...while none of the other tunes have received the same
hype as "My Baby Don't Wear No Panties" (a
favorite on a couple of local radio stations), rest
assured there is plenty more... where that came from.
Kelton knows how to make deliciously gritty blues music
and write extensive lyrics...

...A
pleasant surprise indeed! After seeing it mentioned through
Living Blues magazine I requested a copy and was surprised
by the diversity of music on one cd. A little Funk "Little
black dress", "Let me pump your gas", Rock-Blues "Big
Legged Mama" and deep feeling Blues "Tears on my Guitar",
"Leaving Paradise (goodbye, Louisiana)". Even though the
title of the song "My Baby Don't Wear No Panties" attracted
me to the cd, the rest of the music won me over! Play
him often on The Crazy Coyote Blues and Jazz Power Show
1490 KOTY in southcentral Washington state...

The songs are lyrical genius, phrases twisted to wring
every possible meaning from what started as simple words
on paper. There's not a song on the disc that doesn't
make you stop at least once and think, "Did I hear that
right?" In effect, Gene Kelton takes the storied history
of the blues and its musical heritage, combines it with
the Southern penchant for turning a phrase, and lets
loose with Texas music that deserves its own spotlight...

...Gene
has finally captured the best of his music on this CD.
When KPFT began playing "Panties" last year,
they got tons of calls asking where they could get it.
Songs like "Too White To Play The Blues",
and the beautiful "Tears On My Guitar" . There's
a nice rockabilly cut, and lots of good blues. The party
favorite "My Baby Don't Wear No Panties"...
is most-requested at his live shows....
...Mean
Gene Kelton put himself on the map with good music,
naughty guitar and lyrics. He's not all naughty though.
He can be looking back, in love and blue oh so blue
as well. What stands out upon first listen is his voice.
As deep and coarse as Mississippi mud...
...Most
Requested is a great idea from this Houston-based
guitar slinger. Containing 15 of his most requested
originals, this one makes for a great late night or
party CD that couples can actually swing to. Kudos boys....

...Most
Requested by Mean Gene Kelton. Joining Gene
on the album are his two sons, Jamie (bass guitar) and
Sid (drums). For this album, Gene has culled through his
hundreds of original songs and has selected 15 of his
most requested songs. There's alot of great tunes here.
Our favorites are "Sinking Deeper (Into The Blues)",
"Little Black Dress", "Tears On My Guitar"
and Gene's most requested song, "My Baby Don't Wear
No Panties". If you haven't heard "My Baby Don't
Wear No Panties", you absolutely need to go out and
get this album. This is one of the greatest party songs
of all time. Gene is one of the best guitarists around
and he certainly does shine on this album....

...There's
more variety on "Most
Requested"... shows off the songwriting
and boogie prowess of Mean Gene Kelton. The blues songs
get rocker's interpretations... forays into rockabilly,
honky-tonk and 50's meets Fogerty... "If This Guitar
Could Talk" - top tune...
"Well,
they call me Mean Gene 'cause they say I Play a mean guitar."
It takes an incredible amount of arrogance to write a
song about how good you are. It takes even more arrogance
to make that the title cut of your CD. That arrogance
instantly gets transformed to confidence when you can
back up the claims with a blistering performance.
From the opening riff of Mean Guitar
to the fadeout on "Party On The Levee," the
newest offering by Texas bluesmen Mean Gene Kelton &
The Die Hards delivers on the promise of the title. While
it doesn't break new musical ground or offer up new or
even complex blues arrangements, it does offer solid songwriting
backed by blistering, heartfelt performance.
The new CD picks up right where Most Requested left off,
offering up another mix across the spectrum of the blues.
Songs like "Give Blues A Chance" and "Sweet
Mother Blues" simply beg for a live, improv performance.
The slow, wailing "Ghost In My House" and acoustic
blues of "These Blues Are Kickin' My Ass" showcase
the slower, melodic side of the blues while rockers like
the title cut and "Give Blues A Chance" show
that these boys can rock with the best of them.
If you love blues rock done right, grab this CD right
away. If you don't, get Mean Guitar
and you will.
I
love it!

I love it! This stuff rocks and roars and sets my soul
aflame. I've been looking for a new guitar slinger and
a new band to follow and rave about. Here it is! (FOUR
STARS)
Mean Gene Kelton's "Most
Requested," a fifteen-slice all-original
platter, is aptly titled; liner notes claim it's Gene's
recorded response to fan requests. It's easy to understand
why these are favourites...
Musically most tunes work well... Gene
proving himself both a competent vocalist and top-notch
string-bender. With fifteen tunes clocking in at just
over sixty-six minutes, Gene keeps things pretty tight...
...it's a pleasant and enjoyable listen, with several
cuts guaranteed to liven up a party.
Mean Guitar
is a great title for this album.Gene Kelton does play
a mean rockin guitar on this CD. Gene also lacks nothing
in the vocal department. He lets it go and gives all
he’s got and what he’s got is good. Mean
Guitar is a wonderful mix of songs.
A fine rockin blues album.
and many more that we don't have
